Monkey Mia (Western Australia)
Like most photographers, I was first involved in photography as a kid, and as a hobby. My earliest real photography was done on a fully manual second-hand Minolta 101 – the same camera as my father and grandfather, and one that I still have.
While the tools have changed – I now shoot on digital gear with more electronic capability than the early moon rockets, a panoramic format Hasselblad, and even a drone from time to time – my fundamental objectives haven’t. I still take photos that first and foremost appeal to me – it doesn’t matter if it is my self-motivated landscape or point-in-time images or commercial and commissioned shots, if the particular shot doesn’t appeal to me I still don’t take it.
I tend to think that photography is about showing the world in such a way that when you put a rectangle around a place and a period of time, it makes the scene more than what was there, rather than just a part of what was there.
Using different formats, angles, and technical control are all ways in which a photographer can do this, and the joy of the art form is when you get it right.
I have been operating in a semi-professional mode since 2003. Initially I sold landscape photography by word of mouth, but over the years I have had physical outlets for my work at Capel Vale Winery in the south west of WA, Blue Lagoon Pearls in Shark Bay and Beyond Q bookshop in Canberra. My website has a range of galleries, as well as what you can see here.
As I developed my skills and the business side of my work I began to do more commercial and commissioned work, including studio product shots, weddings and events, location shoots and portraiture. The artistic and landscape side of my work remains my main motivation for photography, but as I have had the opportunity to widen my photographic activities, I have thoroughly enjoyed the chance to apply my skills in a wider range of situations.
I have had work accepted into a number of exhibitions. This has included the South West Survey at the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries, the ArtGEO Where the heart is exhibition in Busselton, and one of my images was included in a collection sent by the City of Bunbury to its Sister City in Japan. In Canberra I held an exhibition titled First Impressions at the PhotoAccess gallery in Manuka.
While I don’t intend or expect ever to operate as a full-time professional photographer (I enjoy my day job too much to ever totally give it up), I have found that the semi-professional mode I have been operating in has let me significantly improve the standard of my work, and shown me a much wider range of considerations to be aware of every time I pick up a camera.
All the images you see on this website are for sale.
Costs are dependent on the size and style you want. I can organise traditional prints, prints on canvas and watercolour paper (often my personal favourites), framing, shirts, stationery and just about anything else you might be interested in – and I’m happy to work with any other service you might want to use to get any other sort of print made, just let me know! Digital copies and rights are also available.
